I have installed HP Smart and connected my printer to my desktop, supposedly. But when I send a task to the printer, nothing happens. When I check the print queue, the task that I sent does not appear. The printer works fine with my mobile phone, and with the HP Smart "welcome" page. When I tried to send a .pdf file to the printer, the window says "print preview error", and a second window says "an error occurred while printing". When I tried to print from an Excel file, i got the window "print preview not available", then a second window that says "could not be printed due to an error on (my printer's model number)"

I suddenly had the same problem. I received a message an HP Support agent to remove the printer and re-install the software and driver. I did all that and it was successfully installed. But the problem remains the same. I can print test pages from the Troubleshooter and from Print & scan doctor. I can print from my phone.

What I CANNOT print is any other document from the computer - Excel, word, Adobe etc.

I wonder now if it's a Windows problem...

There was a bit of a bug in a Windows Update that has been driving people crazy.  Only PCs with specific settings got messed up.  We are a printer/copier support company and have been getting calls from some frazzled people.  Go into your "security and updates" and delete any updates installed since last week.  Turn off your automatic Windows updates.  Wait a week or two and then run the Windows update manual.  MS has it fixed, but it will take a week or two to make it to all the servers around the globe.  Likely you got one of the first versions to hit.  Like two of our admins and even our dispatch manager got hit.

Apparently either the windows-update problem is still not solved, or another cause produces also the effect that a HP-printer (8725) does not send print jobs to the print queue, although (1) the printer  is perfectly embedded in the wifi home-network, from which (2) it can print from other notebooks, and althugh (3) from the notebook that does not send files to the print queue, the HP-printer still reacts fine to ping, and can print plain text from msdos LPR without problems.
