I have an HP officejet J4680 all in one printer. Yet my Windows 10 PC is trying to install the update for the HP Laserjet cm 1410 pcl6. Anyone know why this is happening and how to stop the daily notices that it's failed to update?

Hi! @richards1052, Welcome to HP forums.
I understand the windows update is installing incorrect drivers for your printer.
Don't worry I'd like to help you out.
Did you make any changes to your printer?
Try the steps recommended below.
To uninstall the unwanted driver:
- Launch the Device Manager with a right click on the lower left corner of the desktop and a left click on Device Manager.
- Located the device driver with the problem driver installed, right click and choose Uninstall.
- In the uninstall dialog, check the box to Delete the driver software for this device if available.
To uninstall an unwanted Windows Update:
-
Type “View Installed Updates” in the Search box and then click on View Installed Updates – Control Panel from the Search results.
-
To uninstall the unwanted update, select it from the list and then click Uninstall.
Then, to prevent the driver or update from being reinstalled, download and run the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter described in KB 3073930. (Or run the troubleshooter directly by clicking here.) Follow the instructions within the troubleshooter, and then select to hide the problematic driver or update.
Also, Uninstall the printer from root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.
In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
Select your HP printer.
Select Uninstall.
In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
Click on Drivers tab.
Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.
Select OK.
Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
Close Devices and Printers.
Link to update the full feature printer software.
Install the built-in print driver over a wireless or wired (Ethernet) network connection on a computer with Windows 10 or Windows 8.
Search Windows for devices, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.
Click Add a printer.
Select printer is not in the list, continue to the next step.
Click Next.
Select the port to be used by your printer, such as 'USB001' for a USB connected printer, and then click Next.
Click Windows Update, and then wait for the print drivers to update.
Click HP, Hewlett-Packard, or Hewlett Packard in the Manufacturer pane select Deskjet 990C driver and click next to install the printer driver.

You misunderstood my situation. I have not installed the wrong driver. I have the right driver installed. But in Windows Updates it's listing the wrong driver as a possible update. Before I realized it was the wrong driver I tried to install it, but installation failed. How can I remove the unwanted installation message and why does it think that this incorrect driver is the one I should install?

@richards1052, Thanks for your quick response and time.
I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.
As you mentioned the windows update is suggesting incorrect driver update.
Try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.
Microsoft admits that “in rare cases, a specific driver or update might temporarily cause issues with your device.” To prevent the troublesome driver (or update) to reinstall automatically.
Roll Back Driver
First, you need to remove the irksome driver. The best option is to roll back to the previous version. Right-click the Start button, select Device Manager, right-click the respective device, select Properties, switch to the Driver tab, and click the Roll Back Driver button.
Remove & Replace Driver
Should the rollback option not be available, a workaround is to uninstall the driver and replace it with your preferred version. Before you proceed, obtain the desired driver version from the OEM or a third party supplier.
Note that some manufacturers offer utilities to uninstall old drivers, ensuring a clean removal of all driver-related files from your computer.
If you need to manually remove the driver, right-click the Start button, select Device Manager, right-click the affected device, and select Uninstall.
In the following dialog, check the box Delete the driver software for this device and confirm with OK. This removes the driver file from Windows Update.
Block Driver Update
To prevent this driver from being reinstalled the next time Windows Update runs, you can use the Show or Hide Updates Troubleshooter (direct download), which we have introduced previously.
Briefly, download and run the troubleshooter from Microsoft, on the first screen click Next, then select Hide updates, check the driver/s you would like to hide, click Next again, and you’re done.
You can reverse this setting. Select Show hidden updates from the troubleshooter, check the update/s you want to unhide, and click Next.
How to Stop Automatic Driver Updates
To stop Windows 10 from automatically updating your drivers, you have several options. Note that the Local Group Policy Editor is not available to Windows 10 Home users.
Control Panel
For this solution, you need to head into the System portion of the Control Panel. Right-click the Start button and select System. In the Control Panel sidebar, select Advanced system settings.
In the System Properties window, switch to the Hardware tab and click Device Installation Settings.
You will be asked whether “you want to automatically download manufacturers’ apps and custom icons available for your devices.” Select No and Save Changes.
Note that if it works, this setting disables all your driver updates.
If the solution provided worked for you, please mark accepted solution for this post.
Hope this answers your query!
Take Care! 🙂
