HP LaserJEt Pro MFP m428fdn
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
The M428fdn printer generates a non-standard format error during automatic duplex printing. In manual mode, prints without problems, but slower. Is automatic two-sided printing possible in a non-standard format, in this case, the format 205x288mm ?

The custom size you list is well within specs so in theory it should. Here are a couple of things that might cause problems:

1. Depending on the media type you select the driver may be programmed to not allow duplexing, for instance if you are setting the paper type to any or a heavier paper type the duplex may be disabled because the media may be considered too thick. They do program this type of intelligence into the driver.

2. Do the settings in software and the hard paper size settings on the printer match?

If you are currently using the discrete (machine specific) driver or the Windows supplied driver they may not allow different media types. I would suggest you try installing the printer using the Universal Print Driver V6.9 and trying that.
