I have updated firmware and drivers, reset the default values, do not fax, empty print queue . yet available memory is 129MB while total memory is 256M. I have spent days (no joke) on line trying to clear memory so available memory equal total. Also cannot print large pdfs on my desktop. Print about 10 pages then I get many pages of garbage even after canceling the job and clearing many times from printer's touch screen. I not put more that 20 pages of paper at a time. But print large one pdfs from my hp laptop that I do not go online with. I am disgusted with M227 printer. I am so sorry my Laserjet 4M purchase back in 1995 died and cartridges became unable. If I could purchase a reliable no fuss printer like LJ4M I would. I am afraid to purchase another HP Laserjet or any volume type printer.

You will never get 100% of memory available as some is reserved for normal operations. You could try the print as image button when printing PDFs to see if that helps.

Thank you for respoding.
I have a MFP M227fdw printer which is out of warranty. Otherwise I would have contacted HP support.
I am aware that not all of the printer memory would be available but having 125MB used while the printer is at rest or just power up is ridiculous. I only use the printer to print with a USB cable. This does not make any sense to me. If there are reasons for the M227 to use 129MB of memory even when it is at rest, nothing in the print queue or no faxes since day one I would appreciate knowing why 125Mb memory is used and how I can clear memory so I have closer to 225MB of memory for use.
As for pdfs, I print large pdfs such as 100 pages in duplex mode. The problem seems to be with my desktop. Mind you I copied one pdf roughly 100 pages and print from a hp laptop (win7 pro) that is not online ever, I have no problems. I will try to print other large pdfs from my laptop but I prefer to use my my desktop.
