Try making a standalone copy and check if that works.
Which application are you trying to print from?
Have you tried printing different types of documents/pictures or Webpages and check if the issue persists?
Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:
Update the printer firmware
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Also, check for updates on your iPad
Click here to know how.
Check the toner level
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Supplies (
) icon.
Review the status of the toner cartridges. Replace a low or empty toner cartridge
Print a cleaning page
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Setup (
).
Touch Service, and then touch Cleaning Page.
Load plain, white paper when you are prompted.
Touch OK to begin the cleaning process.
Try to print again to see if the issue is resolved.

Hi Kumar,
what I tried printing was a PDF attachment to an email and the pages came out blank.
yesterday i got a Word attachment and it printed fine, so the issue is PDF attachments from my ipad.
both ipad and the printer are up to date with updates.
any ideas?

This seems like an issue with the PDF application. Try updating the application or re-installing it.
Refer to this document to know how. You may reinstall it from the App Store.
