Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your Deskjet 3720 Printer . I understand that you are getting cartridge error and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.
Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,
Make sure the ink cartridges are compatible.
Make sure the ink cartridges are correctly installed.

Turn on the printer.

Open the ink cartridge access door.
The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

Gently press down on the ink cartridge to release it, and then pull the ink cartridge out of its slot.

Figure : Do not touch the contacts or nozzles

Inspect for and remove any protective tape from the contacts.

Hold the ink cartridge by its sides with the contacts toward the printer, insert the ink cartridge into its slot, and then gently push the ink cartridge until it snaps into place.

Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridge, if necessary.

Close the ink cartridge access door.

Try to print.
Clean the electrical contacts.
Reset the printer.

Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Wait at least 10 seconds.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
-
Turn on the printer.
Click here and refer the document to perform the above steps.
