Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps. Request you to uninstall the printer again by following the exact procedure mentioned below and configure the printer using Windows built-in drivers. Click here for assistance.
Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
Click on print server properties.
You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.
Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
Restart the PC.
Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files, ignore them).
If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
Restart the PC again.
Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.
Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.
Let me know if this helped.

I've done all that and there's been a marginal change.
I still get the "Unable to Communicate with Printer" message before Word prints out a sheet, or if I print a webpage.
I downloaded Print & Scan Doctor again, ran it and it still comes up with the HP psc 1200 and HP psc1200#2 entries.
On the plus side, I only get HP Envy 120 series once (USB connection), rather than three times as before.
The surplus entries in Print & Scan Doctor don't bother me that much as I've never had to use it before but the recent "Unable to Communicate with Printer" box is a very annoying feature. I assume now it's caused by traces of the older and discarded 1200 printer, rather than the computer trying to print twice from the Envy (USB and non-connected wireless). The wireless icon IS on (I tried turning it off) because with the icon off, the Maintain Your Printer command in the HP Printer Assistant box didn't work (it said "computer is unable to establish a connection with the device"). The test sheet said "No problems found. Congratulations on the successful setup of your wireless printer."
Why this should all happen now, rather than last year when I replaced the 1200 with the Envy is a complete mystery!

I uninstalled the printer, created a new user account (but I'm obviously back on my own original account now to be able to write this!) and reinstalled the printer. I didn't do any Cntl R stuff because you didn't say which of the options to choose and maybe they were irrelevant.
Anyway, there's no difference. I printed off a web page (obviously no Word in the new account) and again got the "Unable to Communicate" box-----but the page printed anyway.
Out of curiosity, I ran the Print & Scan Doctor as that continued over into the desktop of the new account. Again two instances of the old psc1200 appeared and this time two of the Envy, one USB connected and one Netwok not connected.
So what next?
