Please know that I am not the best one to answer this question.
I can offer the following limited advice:
Firmware
I did not find anything in the Firmware notices about "Media" sizes -- nonetheless, if you have not done so previously, it is generally recommended that you keep the Firmware Updated.
Please READ all instructions carefully before updating the Firmware.
Reminder:
Full Solution Software (printer software) must be installed / functional before the Firmware is updated

If the Software supports the Media type you are using, select that first - Next set the Paper Size -- if available, select the size from the supported size list for the Media type.
Documentation provides at least some information that explains how to create a Custom Paper Size.
- If you can select your Media type (photo paper) in the software you are using to submit the job to the printer,
- Create a Custom Size for the job as explained in this document:
HP Enterprise, HP LaserJet Pro - Select the paper size (Windows)

Change print-job settings (Windows)
No idea whether that is all there is to it -- or whether it will work.
Sounds easy enough looking in from the outside... ??
