thank your for your response. i do not know what the old password and the printer will prompt for it. i tried a reset (factory? not sure) and it seemed to do the trick. as an fyi for anyone reading this:
1. turn off printer
2. keep finger on bottom left corner of display panel (if left doesn't work, try bottom right)
3. turn on printer
4. when message displays about " xxxxx INIT" (don't remember the wording), remove finger from display panel
5. display panel should prompt for language
these steps worked for me to reset the printer with an unkown password.

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.
I understand that you have an HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw and ould like to remove the password on it I'd like to assist you with this case.
I did some research and found that in order to remove or change the password, it does require the user to remember the old password. However, you may still try this workaround and refer to page no. 84 of the user guide. NOTE: For some printers, to remove the password, you must delete the password from password box and leave it blank and then click on Apply button.
Feel free to let me know how it goes. All the best! 🙂
