For me the issue was related to HP Universal print Driver's installed on the system. (WinXP x86)
1. Remove the HP Universal Print Drivers, reboot and run the install. (not the option i used due to i need the HP Uni Driver for other printers on the network)
or
2. During the install process when the system detects and installs the printer I noticed that it installed the HP Universal Driver.
At this point I left the 1536dnf install process running
opened device manager
clicked view and show hidden devices
expanded printers
Right click on the HP universal driver
clicked update driver
clicked no not at this time
Install printer from list
clicked dont search I will choose driver
Selected the HP LAserJet M1530 MFP PCL6 driver
WinXP installed this driver and the HP 1536 install process finished without issue.
same process should work for Win7 x86 or x64

Having rung HP support three times regarding Laserjet 1530 mfp hanging at 99%. on XP. install.
Each protracted call lasting near two hours. Looking and trying seemingly every thing. Finally asking a supervisor and being told there was nothing more they could do! That I needed a tech look at my computer.
In desperation finally stumbling on this post to have it work smoothly. The writer assuming the reader has some concept of what he's about. Sadly no. But the instruction works, even if it leaps beyond point by point inst. BUT IT WORKS
So again thanks for bothering to post. Now,,, who will inform HP inc.

Hi shreernaga
I understand you want to know how to scan with the Laserjet 1536.
The printer software installs HP Scan software for scanning.
The Read Iris 12 is a third party software included for additional OCR scanning.
To access the HP Scan software, go to the start, all programs, HP, Laserjet m1536, click HP Scan. See if the printer is being detected through that software.
I would download and run the Print and Scan Doctor to fix common printing and scanning problems.

Did you have any errors during the installation?
Can you print?
If you need more assistance just let me know.
