Laserjet 1600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and am trying to reconnect my Laserjet 1600 up to it.  I'm having some issues.  Snooping around on the internets, apparently I'm not the only one, but I have failed to find a solution that works for me.

As I'm writing this I'm a bit frustrated that windows 10 is not recognizing my printer because: A) even though it is old, it is in perfect (mechanicaly speaking) working condition, B) despite it's age it's still frig'n expensive to replace the toner cartridges, which I recently did prior to reconnecting it (since it would not work without new toner), and C) trying to find an email to send tech support a very simple question ("Hi, I have a Laserjet 1600, how do I get it to work on Win 10?) is impossible to find, forcing me to comb through pages and pages of web pages..., sorry, I'm starting to rant, and I don't want to rant.

SO, I have a Laserjet 1600, windows 10, and am looking for a way to get them to talk to one another.  How do I do that?

Soooooo, I disconnected the Laserjet, uninstalled it's driver and left it alone for a day.  Tonight, I hooked it back up to my computer, which sensed it, reinstalled the drivers...,

and it's now working perfectly.  And I have no idea why.  But it works, so, hazzah!

Very difficult for anyone to offer advice without knowing rather more about just what these 'issues' are.

My Windows 10 Professional 64-bit system has a built-in driver for Colour LaserJet 1600 printers:

You may have to click the Windows Update button in the Add Printer dialogue, then wait (perhaps for several minutes) whilst additional drivers are downloaded, before the list is repopulated.

Of course, I have no idea if this driver will work successfully, or if it will provide all of the features that you may want.

This is true.  Sorry, it was late, and I was cranky, and didn't give any details.

Basically, when I hooked the HP Laserjet 1600 up to my computer (via USB cable) the computer recognized it and auto-installed the driver.  But when I attempted to print using it, the print job would get transferred over to my default printer.  I tried this several times to make sure I was actually selecting the Laserjet.  If I made the Laserjet the default, nothing would happen.  Also, when the print dialog box comes up, and I selected the Laserjet, and then clicked on the properties button, nothing would happen.

So the Laserjet seems to be in some sort of limbo, the computer recognizes it as being hooked up to it, but doesn't recognize it when it's time to print.

I suspect that most of us have had days like that!

Excellent - thanks for letting us know.

A problem with USB-connected devices is one that I probably would not have been able to advise on.

I had much the same problem with my laserjet 1600. I was pleased that it was immediately recognized but disappointed that it failed immediately on a test page.

After much mucking about I shut the device down, removed it and then powered it back up. And it works fine now!

Ps. in the interim I had used the HP Support Assistant to apply all outstanding HP patches.... not sure if that helped or hurt.
