Further to previous, and because I am not one to give up easily, I searched "m254dw packet loss" and came across this thread on this very site:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/M252dw-Keeps-Dropping-Off-Network/td-p/5030311

I followed the advice (screenshot below) to assign the printer it's own static IP address.   I did not disable auto off as it suggests.  I pasted the printer's IP address into my browser and found the printer settings pages there.  There was only one field for IP address within the iPv4 setting, so I put in 8.8.8.8.  (I saw no mention of Preferred DNS or Alternate DNS as is suggested in the post...).   When I hit "apply" I was warned that I may lose contact with the printer, and indeed after loading the new settings the old IP address no longer takes me to the printer settings on the web.  I thought entering 8.8.8.8 would now do so.  but it doesn't.  Hmmm..    BUT -- now when I run a network ping test on 8.8.8.8 I get 0.0% packet loss every time, and the printer seems to be working consistently so far.   When I go to settings on the printer itself I see that that IPv4 is set to "Manual" and shows 008.008.008.008 as the address.  Note that I also did *not* disable IPv6 as the screenshot suggests.

At this point I'm not sure what I would put into my browser if I needed to get back to the printer settings.  But if it's working I'm happy.   I'll ask my wife to try printing some things tomorrow.

Please let me know if there are any other settings I need to adjust either on the printer, router, or Macs or if I have properly set up this static IP thing.   Thank you...

I am glad you found a fix.

For now, try printing and see how it pans out.
