A line of magenta dots runs down the left side of the printed page. the dots are small, and evenly spaced about one inch apart. They run the entire length of the page.
Occurance is inconsistent, and varies not only by application but within applications: some MS Word documents print with dots, some firefox print with dots, some do not. The dots do not appear to occur when printing in grayscale. Have printed same page from firefox in color and in grayscale and dots only appeared on color version. They have appeared on black-only Word documents, but not in every case.
I have done the following: rebooted, updated firmware and software, printed and examined configuration report, run a cleaning cycle and printed a cleaning page, removed and re-installed the magenta toner cartridge.
Toner cartridge is genuine HP, virgin, and still about 1/2 full.
Thank you for any insights you may have.

Magenta dots can only come from one place. The toner cartridge. Most times there is a defect on the drum of the toner cartridge that causes this. If the toner is hp original and has as you say 50% toner left then it should be covered under warranty. If you purchased the toner from someone other than hp, then you need to return to place of purchase for refund or exchange. If the toner came directly from hp either by ordering or with the printer, then you need to contact hp customer care.
