HOLY CRAP! Thank you so much! ALL the dumb support option needs to say (in the instructions would help) and then no screen shots would not even be necessary is:
USE the numbers found below File Sharing On and file name only, example:
THIS -->//192.168...14/scan
NOT //192.168...14/users/jondoe/documemts/scan
FINALLY! SHEESH

Well, what you had in the last exchange below looked good to me, simple enough, yet when I followed that, the test continued to fail (of course without any dignostic clues as to why it is failing. My address under file sharing starts "10.0.X.XX" (using X for the real numbers here). So I entered //10.0.X.XX/Public where Public is the name of the shared folder inside the Users/myName/ folders. Still did not work. File sharing is on, SMB is selected, and my account is checked below that. Any more clues? I have a MacBook Pro and a new HP LaserJet Pro MFP477 fnw printer. Do I need to install additional software??

That's where I found the detailed explanation, did you check that as well?

Yes, I did look at that. The easier path is to use "preview", and then "Import from scanner" on the drop down menu. The file to network folder approach seems ridiculously complicted and I could not make it work, based on the info in the link you cited.
