Who are you thanking?  What was the solution?

Greetings @ JHVT,

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are facing an issue with your printer.

If you could provide more information, I will be able glad to assist you.

May I know the printer model you are using?

What is the operating system installed on your computer?

How the printer connected to your computer? USB to wireless.

If wireless, are you using a dual band router?

Are you facing any print quality issues?

Please provide more information for assistance.

Keep me posted.

Chimney, here are the answers to your questions:

Printer model:   p1102w

operating system:   Windows 7

How the printer connected to your computer?  The idea is to return to using it wirelessly, but I can use the USB for set up.

If wireless, are you using a dual band router?  Yes

Are you facing any print quality issues?  It's not on the network, so it won't print.  It prints fine using USB.  I can see the printer's own very strong WIFI signal.

Thanks for the reply and providing the requested information.

If you have installed the full feature software of the printer on your computer. Follow the procedure mentioned in this HP Article to run the utility to convert the USB setup to wireless automatically.

Note: HP Printers do not work or connect to 5Ghz networks. If you are using a dual band router, please give different names to 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz networks and connect the printer to the 2.4Ghz network.

Let me know how it goes. Good Luck.

Nope, not even close.

I even downloaded and reinstalled the software.   (Win7.)

The "conversion " instructions say:

If your HP printer software is installed, use Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7:

         Start -> Programs -> HP -> -> Printer Setup & Software.

But the is no such program in the HP folder.

Using the "wireless configuration" software  for the 5th time, (starting with the USB cable as instructed) it found the network and the log in, and IP address, and said it was successfully connected wirelessly.  I even disconnected the USB cable and it printed the test page successfully!

But that was a fake, because it cannot print anything else wirelessly.

Come on HP: it's a great printer, can't you give us some decent support from your lousy software?

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps. Convert USB to wireless should be available if you have installed the full feature software of the printer.

Recommend you add the printer using Windows built-in drivers as suggested in this HP Article and let me know if this helped.

Keep me posted. Good Luck.

Note: When you do the printer software install on your computer, make sure that the USB cable is disconnected. Only reconnect after the installer asks you to.

What you need to change the TCP/IP settings on a LaserJet P1102  |  P1560 | P1600 Series wireless printer is:

wificonfig.exe

It comes with other HP wireless printer installs and should run at the end, asking you to connect the USB cable and popping up a window to allow you to select your Wifi network and enter the password. It will give you an option to print a single test page and "Finish"; that page will list the new IP address along with other relevant settings.

The latest version of wificonfig may not run correctly or at all, but the 31 August 2012 version from the installer CD will work, though you may have to uninstall the newer software first.

wificonfig will only synchronize the printers TCP/IP settings with your router. Any other configuration changes like power and wireless sleep timeouts will have to be done through its web page, now accessible through the newly set IP address.

You will need to run wificonfig from a PC running Windows and connected to the printer by USB.

You will need to do it any time you:

- Reset the printer (which zeroes out all the network settings)

- Change routers, internet service providers or otherwise change the LAN DHCP address allocation in your router.
