Printer will not print automatically from Tray 1.  I have to actually push the button on the printer to get it to print.

Hi @Linder92

Welcome to the HP Support Community! Thanks for posting your query!

We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing that detail—it helps us start narrowing things down. Since the printer is waiting for you to press a button before pulling from Tray 1, I’d like to gather a bit more information so we can isolate the cause before moving into steps.

  • Could you let me know the exact printer model you’re using?
  • Is Tray 1 the default tray you normally print from, or do you also have other trays installed?
  • When you send a print job from the computer, does the printer display any message on its screen (for example, “Load Tray 1” or “Press OK to continue”)?
  • Are you printing plain paper, or a specific type/size of media?
  • Has this behavior started recently, or has it always required pressing the button?
  • Which operating system are you printing from (Windows or macOS)?

Once I have these details, I’ll be able to guide you with precise steps tailored to your setup.

Regards,

Hawks_Eye

Thank you for your great response on this problem.  I have resolved the problem, though it was by accident.

The old "unplug it and plug it back in" solution worked.  Though it was only by accident because I needed the outlet for something else.  Once it powered back up, it was auto printing again.  I'll have to remember this next time.  Typically when I change setting to print an envelope I have this problem.  I thought in the past I had corrected a setting to resolve it, however nothing was working.  Anyway, happy it's working again.  Thank you!

You are very welcome @Linder92

That’s a classic fix—you’d be surprised how often a simple power cycle clears out whatever glitch is holding a printer back.

What likely happened is that the printer’s internal memory or print queue got stuck after the envelope setting change, and unplugging it forced a full reset of the hardware and firmware.

I’m glad it’s working again—it’s always satisfying when the “accidental fix” turns out to be the right one.

Stay fantastic, and have an amazing day ahead!
