HP Laser Jet 1022
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

I am getting a repetetive image defect that appears approximately every 2.25 inches from top to bottom on the paper.

It is almost centered on the paper from left to right.

It consists of an round/oval spot about 2/10 of an inch in diameter where the toner does not adhere to the paper.

I have replaced the toner cartridge but this did not fix the problem.

Is this a problem with the fuser?

Or could it be a piece of debris or something stuck on a roller?  (Does the printer even HAVE any rollers that are not part of the toner cartridge?)

How can I diagnose and hopefully fix it?

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

I understand that you are facing a print quality issue, need not worry I'll be glad to assist you.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

How long are you facing this issue?

I suggest you do a Hard Reset

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.

(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

When you have a spot where toner does not adhere to the paper then that would be a fuser problem because the fuser melts or fuses that plastic toner particles onto the paper.

There are times when something like a piece of label is stuck to the fuser hot roller, but if you find this be extremely cautious removing it because that hot roller is a thin plastic sleeve which is very easy to damage.

Thanks for your reply.  I took apart the printer and inspected the fuser assembly.  Couldn't see any obvious problems such as debris stuck on the fuser roller or damage to the roller.  Put it back together.  Unfortunately, the repetetive defect persists.  The fuser assembly appears to be hard-wired in at some of its connections, so I don't know if replacing it is even an option.

Especially maddening since I recently bought a double-package of toner cartridges (which cost about $150) for the printer and apparently none of HPs newer printers use this cartridge.

I guess we will just have to live with the repetetive print defect until the toner cartridges are used up, then replace the whole printer.

The fuser is replaceable, and you could probably replace the Film Sleeve, but you might want to see if you can find a printer available on the secondary market.
