I don't remember when I purchased the printer but it has been longer than the warranty.  I have run the laser printer cleaning sheets through the printer several times but the printer still smudges an area about 3 inches wide the length of the page left of center.  Have ask at office depot where I purchased it and they do not work on printers and tell me they are not made to last, but for replacement.  We don't use it that much would like to fix what seems like should be an easy job.  I havent changed the type of paper I have always used.  Same computer, we recently moved but the printer was working just fine for five months after move so don't think that is it. Have taken all toner cartriges out and checked the drums they are clean.  Can anyone help.  I cant find a way to get into the working parts to check for  cleaness.

Thanks in advance; bigflare

defect could be with the transfer belt, it sits under the toner cartridge tray.  if you remove the toner and extend the tray you can shine a light in there to see the belt.  if the defect is on it, you'll most likely see it.  If you do see a defect on the belt and dont consider yourself technical, best to replace the printer.  there is dissassembly involved with extracting that belt.

If you slide your fingers over the smudged area does it feel "Grainy"?

Does the toner in the smudged area smear when you slide your fingers across it?

If either question is answered yes then the Fuser has probably failed and  you can probably by a refurb/recertified printer for less money than it would cost to replace the Fuser.
