Hi @int3man,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I understand that the software installation for your HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer gets stuck at“Enabling HP Web Services and checking for updates…”, and you are unable to complete the installation to get the desktop shortcuts.
Thank you for sharing the screenshots. The second screenshot shows a Web Server Communication Failure during the Configure Product stage.
Let's try the following:
- Make sure the computer has an active Internet connection.
- On the Web Server Communication Failure screen, if your Internet connection is working, select Continue as indicated in the message and check whether the installation proceeds.
- If you use firewall or security software, check that it is not blocking the HP installer or HP Web Services communication, as indicated by the installer message.
- Restart the computer and printer, and then try the installation again.
- Make sure you are using the software available for your HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf rather than an older installation package or CD.
The HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer Setup page provides the HP LaserJet M1536 Full Feature Software and Driver for supported operating systems. HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
If the installation still stops at the same screen, please let us know:
- Which Windows version is installed on the computer?
- Is the printer connected by USB or Ethernet/network connection?
- When you select Continue on the error message, does the installer continue, return to the same screen, or close?
- Are you installing a freshly downloaded copy of the HP software, or using the original installation CD/software?
Please note that the current driver page lists operating-system selections through Windows 10 for this model, so knowing the exact Windows version is important before proceeding further.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Internet connection is fine. Downloaded software. Installed as a Network printer with a cat 5 at the bridge. Rebooted everything. It seems to me that HP has removed the URL connection. Also when it goes to register the printer that URL fails, not found. So HP set it up that it checks for updates prior to installing the desktop icons. The printer works and it installs the driver for the fax machine as well. Just no way to scan.

Hi @int3man,
Thank you for getting back to us and providing the additional details.
I understand that the printer is connected through your network using an Ethernet cable, printing is working, and the fax driver has been installed successfully. However, the installation does not complete, and you are unable to access the scanning functionality.
The screenshot you initially shared shows a Web Server Communication Failure during the HP Web Services configuration stage. Since the printer is already communicating with the computer for printing, we should focus on getting the HP scanning software and scanner driver installed.
Please try the following:
1. Check whether HP Scan is installed
- Click the Windows Start menu.
- Search for HP Scan.
- If HP Scan appears, open it and check whether your HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf is listed.
- Try scanning a document.
The HP software package for this printer includes HP Scan, HP WIA Scan Driver and HP TWAIN Scan Driver.
2. Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
- Press Windows + R.
- Type services.msc and press Enter.
- Locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Check whether its status is Running and its startup type is Automatic.
- If it is stopped, right-click it and select Start.
- Restart the computer and check scanning again.
HP identifies the WIA service as an important component for communication between Windows and the scanner: HP printers - Scanner not found or connected (Windows, macOS) | HP® Support
3. Check the available HP software: HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support.
Select your Windows version and check whether the HP LaserJet M1536 Full Feature Software and Driver is available.
Please note that HP's current download page lists operating systems up to Windows 10 for this model. If you are using Windows 11, the full-feature software may not be officially listed for that operating system.
To help us determine the next step, could you please confirm:
- Which Windows version are you using (Windows 10 or Windows 11)?
- When you search for HP Scan in the Windows Start menu, does the application appear, or is it missing completely?
- On the installer error screen, do you see the Retry and Exit options shown in your screenshot? What happens when you select Retry?
Once we have these details, we can check the appropriate installation method and help you get the scanning functionality working.

Hi Thanks for your prompt response. So I grabbed my Win 11 laptop and took it into the Landry room. Downloaded the 64 bit version. I noticed that the software was copyrighted in 2015. So I went old school, I turned off WIFI and plugged in as a USB port and installed the software. I did install s HP folder on the Desktop. But inside there was no Scanner button. The Win Scan is running on Auto. The install software did complete installation and didn't hang. I unchecked the Register this product button. I'll pull the Windows 10 box after I get it running on the portable laptop.
Thanks for your time
Michael

Hi All,
So I searched for Free Scanner software and found Microsoft had a version available. I installed and it saw the Scanner on my Win 10 machine. So I'm going to calling it good and move on.
Thanks
Michael
