hp omen 15-AX033DX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello guys I have the hp omen 15-ax033dx.I noticed when i run the unigine benchmarks or when I play games the fps are low around 15-20fps but when i connected the wall socket the fps increases and overall performance improves.I tried with a hptech  representative but we werent able to solve the problem .I have tried windows in high performance and disabling battery boost. Has anyone else with this kind of notebook encountered this issue and might have a solution. The gpu is Nvidia GTX 960M 4GB.Thanks in advance

Hello, @Joe_Knight – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for reaching out! I read your post about the slow fps on your HP Omen notebook. I am happy to look into this issue for you!

First off, certainly do appreciate all your efforts in troubleshooting the issue. Let me take it from here 🙂

Going through your post, you mentioned that the performance is better when connected to the power outlet. Hence, I believe changing the power options setting would do the trick here. Here are the steps listed out for you:

  • Go to Control panel - Power options
  • Now click on the "Change plan settings" next to the selected power plan.
  • Click on "Change advanced power settings".
  • Now, expand the "Graphics settings".
  • Make sure the "Maximum performance" is selected on both battery & plugged in options.
  • Apply the settings, restart your notebook and then check the performance.
  • I would also recommend you to check the other settings under the advanced power options settings if the issue still persists.

Let me know if that helps!

Good luck 🙂

Hello, @Joe_Knight

Thanks for the reply & appreciate your efforts 🙂

The reason the frames drop when unplugged is because that most of the laptops are designed in such way since it greatly reduces the amount of battery time, due to running at max performance while playing games. However, try the settings below. It seems to have helped many gaming customers with the similar issue:

Try going into NVIDIA CP > Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings > Power Management > Prefer Max Performance. Then Apply, and then try running your game on battery.

Also, when you unplug the laptop look in the taskbar in the bottom right near your system clock and see what Power Setting the laptop is using. if it is something like "Battery Saving Mode" or "Balanced Mode" you need to change this to "High-Performance Mode" if not done already.

Let me know how that goes!

Happy gaming 🙂

Hello again Dvortex .Thanks alot for replies and assistance ,I did as you said but unfortunately  there has been no change in performance .I am trying to understand why still it cant be fixed despite the suggestions provided. Is it how this notebook has been designed not to use full power on battery despite the changing to high performance settings ? or Its a notebook design flaw?, or is it the battery inside in the notebook isnt powerfull enough to give enough power for the graphics card or still are there some high performance settings I have tweaked yet?.

I would also would love to know if this model is equiped with Nvidia Optimus technology & if present how can I  disable it?..maybe its the one causing this issue. thanks again for the asssistance :manlol:

Hello, @Joe_Knight

Thanks for the update!

Yes, your laptop model is equipped with the NVidea Optimus technology. Optimus enables your PC to toggle between the graphic cards to give both better battery life and the gaming experience.

Instead of completely disabling the Optimus, I would suggest you to simply add a particular program so that the Optimus recognizes it to use the NVidea 960m.

Go to http://hp.care/2kRVToX and follow the steps under "Setting the graphics processor for one software program or game" to change the graphic processor for a particular program.

But, if you want to completely disable the switch between the graphics, then you will have to disable the same from the BIOS. Just note you will get a much shorter battery life.

Go to BIOS (Turn on or restart the computer, quickly press ESC, and then press F10) and under Control Panel > Power Settings, change everything to "High-performance".

Let me know if this helps!

Good luck 🙂

Hi @Joe_Knight, I am the @Chimney_83. It looks like you were interacting with @Dvortex, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Recommend you to run an extensive test on the computer to make sure all the components are running fine. Click here for assistance.

As run HP Support Assistant to make sure all the drivers are updated.

Also, you can install the graphics driver from Nvidia website and check the performance. Once you have installed the driver from Nvidia website, try the settings suggested in the earlier post to improve the performance while playing any game or application.

Hello @Chimney_83 .I  ran the extensive test and everything passed no errors found.I have the latest Nvidia Drivers..The pc is clean free from viruses, I even performed a system restore from a factory image, bios is updated, high performance settings have been set  to high performance.I have even gone to the bios to check on what could cause the problem and found nothing. Please findout if maybe its a common issue with other  notebooks of the same exact model as mine or its a problem unique to  this notebook. Thanks again for your assistance.:smileyhappy:

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps. As all test has passed, recommend you to contact our phone support to check if they can take a remote of your notebook and check.

The graphics card installed on your computer requires a lot of power and if the performance drops only when the notebook is working on battery. Recommend you to check for any BIOS update available and install it on the computer.
