Cannot enter wi-fi password

I cannot enter the wifi password on myHP 5255.  The touchpad keys have one button for abc, one for def, etc.  A prior reply said that if you want a "c" then tap the "abc" button three times.  If I tap the "abc" button three times, I get three "a"s in a row.
