Why does the ENVY 5530 printer crash with a printer error message that says "There is a problem with the printer.  Turn the printer off, then on." with all flashing buttons if I repeatedly open and force quit the HP Smart App on iPad too quickly?

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. I came across your post and would like to assist.

I understand that you have an HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One Printer. I read that the printer crashes with an error message stating "There is a problem with the printer.  Turn the printer off, then on" and all lights start flashing. This happens when you force quit the HP Smart app on your iPad too quickly.

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Are you able to close the HP Smart app normally rather than force closing it? Please check what happens if you close the HP Smart app normally.
  • Is the error message appearing on the printer's screen or from the HP Smart app?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector.
  • Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

If you force close the HP Smart app soon after initiating a command from it, then there is a likely chance that the app is still communicating with the printer. Then due to the lack of communication, the printer might crash.

If the HP Smart app does not allow you to close it normally then I suggest you to uninstall it and reinstall it.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know. Good luck! 🙂

I can't accept as solution because I deleted my HP Passport account by clicking the Delete User button in Delete Profile.  I re-registered for a new HP Passport account with the same email address but could not reuse the old screen name and had to create a new screen name because the old screen name is already in use.

Thank you for your reply.

I'm glad to hear that you would like to mark my post as accept as a solution. But read that because of change in your HP Passport account, you're unable to do it.

Please feel free to keep me posted for any further assistance.

Happy printing!
