HP Officejet Pro 6978
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have an HP Officejet Pro 6978 that until recently, I could open my HP Smart, and choose the Scan button, and scan from the printer to my PC.  In the last week, it has started requiring me to long into the HP Cloud Services.  I do not want to do that!  I want the old method of scanning from my printer to my PC without logging in.

I have read in some of the threads that I can download and start the HP Scan Extended, but when I open it, it says it cannot find my printer (when it is clearly there - I just ran maintenance on it).

What can I do?  I am ready to go out and get a Brother or Epson that won't require me to join the HP Monopoly.

Thanks!

Roger

HP Scan Extended is an old subset of the HP Full Feature Software that provides some interesting scan function for older drivers that might lack particular features in HP Scan.  In spite of the fact that HPSE installs by itself, it is fully dependent on your having (previously) installed the full driver for the printer.

Do you need it?  Likely not ... Regardless, it generally doesn't hurt anything to install HPSE after the full driver is installed.

What else?

True, using the HP Full Feature Software - "full driver" - which does include HP Scan - does not require you to sign in to the software using your HP Account.

True, HP Scan provides a multitude of features, many of these similar in function to HP Smart.

What to do?

Based on the printer model...

If you have not done so, consider installing the update for the printer Firmware.

At this writing, the current update is marked "Critical"

Reminder:  Always read the description and any other sections before installing Firmware.

HP Officejet 6950/6960/Pro 6960/Pro 6970 All-in-One Printer series Firmware Update

and

If you have not done so, download-save-install the Full Feature Software for the printer

HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software

About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full" driver set (as opposed to the basic driver).

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Full driver provides print and scan functions (even if HP Smart continues to be stubborn).
