HP printer from smartphone?

I currently don't have a laptop, but sometimes I need to print a few papers. That's why I've been considering getting a printer. Specifically, the HP DeskJet 2720e because I found it at a cheap price. It has the option to connect via smartphone. However, I'm wondering if HP printers, in general, can be used without a laptop/PC? Or is it necessary to initially connect it to a PC to install some drivers and then use the smartphone app?

Modern printers, including those from HP,  generally do not require a PC to use the printer.

Printers, even the less expensive models, require the printer ink to be maintained and managed.

Some printing can be managed using Wi-Fi Direct (wireless between printer and device (phone) without a router / network)

Some printing tasks require that the printer be connected to your network to access the full range of features.

Importantly --  printers are not simple, switch-on-when needed, maintenance-free devices.

This model series, as you have found, is a less capable type of printer.

This DeskJet series does not have a fully functional printer control panel -- you have to communicate with the printer using your Smart Phone or other device.  Not a problem -- just something to understand.

This series of printer does not support all the features found in a more expensive model.

For example,

This DeskJet printer series requires a larger margin along the bottom edge.

Borderless Printing is not supported.

True - Using a PC and the full driver printer software provides fuller access to the features available in the printer.

The programs and apps on the PC usually include more options for print and scan tasks.

Mobile apps are usually adequate for simple and general printing and scanning needs.

Dragon Opinion

If you have not owned a printer before, ask a friend, colleague, or family member about their experiences.

Occasional printing might best be done at a friend's home or office, at a library, or community center.
