I purchased a HP deskjet 4158E. I had another HP printer but the paper feed stopped grasping the paper. I was told this happened because I needed to leave it on even when not using it. Is this correct? Should I leave the printer on even if I’m not using it? I am a senior over 60 and devices now are more complicated than when I was younger and I don’t believe everything I read. I hope to hear from you soon! Thank you!

Generally - Yes - leave the printer "ON" - it will sleep when it is not in use.
Entering "Sleep" mode allows the printer to wake up and complete its on board self-maintenance steps.
As to the previous printing not picking up paper because you turned it off -- well, maybe...
More likely the mechanics developed an issue or the printer was dirty. Yes, built up dirt might be an indirect result of keeping the printer switched off except when used. The truth might be closer extra maintenance steps needed every time the printer was switched on >> The printer would have to go through a more complete check / setup after having been off. Add up the many times the printer might have to complete the extra steps after having been shut off and it is possible the printer wore out more quickly. Regardless, that would not be your fault -- Stuff does wear out, break, do odd stuff even if you do everything "just right".

Dragon-Fur,
Good morning! Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I will do that, even though I don’t use it much. If I’d known this with my HP Officejet 5610xi All-In-One it would probably be working still today and I’ve had it since 2009 & it was working fine up until 2020 when I stopped using it as much. HP printers & their products are great! Again thank you for your support. 🙏🏼

You are welcome.
You likely stopped using the old printer about the time it also no longer had driver support.
So - "good timing" and all that.
Smiling.
The new printer supports printing and scanning applications.
If you are using Windows, you can also opt to install the Full Feature Software to extend the ways you use the printer.

Dragon-Fur,
LOL actually it was still scanning & other functions were still working perfectly the only problem was the paper feed. I wanted to take it to get it repaired but my daughter said it would cost me more & to buy a new one; it would be less expensive 😁 I would’ve taken it to get it repair. As a boomer I hate good things going to waste. 😂 You young folk think differently believe me when I tell you it took me a while to decide to get a new one. 🥹

Wry smile here -- not "young folk", Lee.
Another Boomer.
I have lived my life with tech -- so perhaps my perspective is indeed a bit different. 🤔
True -- the tendency to keep, refurbish, use, and protect is not a universal practice for amongst all generations.
