HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer - L411a

When connected to my Surface by cable, my HP Officejet 100 mobile printer randomly prints - not any of my files - but some diagnostic gibberish, using up a lot of paper.  What is going on and how to fix this?

Hi @TomK34

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

It sounds like your HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer is encountering a communication issue with your Surface, which can sometimes cause it to print out diagnostic or error pages. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem:

Check Connections: Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and your Surface. If possible, try using a different USB cable to rule out any cable issues.

Update Drivers: Make sure that the printer drivers on your Surface are up to date. You can check for updates through Windows Update or by visiting the HP website to download the latest drivers for your printer model.

Printer Settings: Go to your printer settings on your Surface:

  • Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Select your printer, and click on Manage. Check the settings to ensure it's set as the default printer and that no unusual settings are enabled.

Reset the Printer: Try resetting the printer to clear any potential errors:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from power for a few minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

Clear Print Queue: Sometimes, jobs stuck in the print queue can cause issues:

  • Open the print queue by clicking on the printer icon in the taskbar or through Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Cancel any queued jobs.

Print Test Page: Try printing a test page directly from the printer to see if it prints correctly. You can usually find this option in the printer settings.

Check for Error Codes: If the printer is displaying any error codes or messages, consult the user manual or HP’s support site for guidance.

Firmware Update: Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer on the HP support website.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
