I am confused with the internet hook up choices....I understand my laptop & printer need to be hooked to the same wireless internet to be used together; however, I don't understand what is Wi-Fi Direct and is it better than a wireless internet connection.

WiFi Direct is a WiFi network that the printer sends out.
The WiFi name will be something like DIRECT_7855.
To use WiFi direct you need to connect the Phone or PC to that WiFi, then you can print from there.
One problem with that is when you are connected to the printers WiFi direct network you can't do anything else.
I turned off WiFi Direct on my printer.
With the printer connected to your home WiFi everything works.
