I appreciated your help providing links to manuals, but technical jargon to untechie users like me doesn't help, e.g. WPS method, SSID, Gateway technology and the rest.  Anyway, got there in the end.  Thanks again

Sell the HP printer and buy one that connects to wi-fi. Every time I print I have to go through the same the process of connecting through the HP doctor. It then says it can't connect and three or four minutes later the bloody thing prints!!!!!

I'm a user, not a wi-fi engineer!!!!!!
