Hello Cloudqueen

Many thanks for your suggestions. After reconnecting the power supply after many hours the printer burst into life and printed the queue.

Hi  @michaeld2,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you're unable to get out of MFG Mode on your HP ENVY 5540 printer. Try setting the printer back to factory default:

1. Touch Setup
2. Touch Printer Maintenance
3. Touch Restore
4. Touch Factory Settings

Let me know if that helps!
