My dad owns an HP Notebook 14-cf0014dx. He's had it for years and years now.
Its no longer playing audio. He informed me this happened after the device told him to restart.
I jumped on and foolishly cleared out whatever audio device it was casting to. A Vizio something-or-other that I'm sure is floating around in my house somewhere.
From there its just not playing any sound.
In Device Manager its High Definition Audio Driver proudly displays its Code 10 error.
- I tried finding drivers on HPs website however they do not have anything I can use
- Its on 2H22 I believe, which is crazy out-of-scope, and windows update doesn't want to work either
- Of course, it cannot get W11 but I wasn't about to thrust those problems onto him anyhow; my thought was maybe putting it onto 2h24 or whatever might nullify this problem.
- Its on 2H22 I believe, which is crazy out-of-scope, and windows update doesn't want to work either
- I tried uninstalling and reinstalling that device in device manager
- It comes back, in its errored state, regardless of whether I "scan for hardware changes" or simply reboot the machine
I have not tried to update the BIOS at this point.
I tried running diagnostics for just the audio but it kept yelling at me to restart the machine because apparently booting into diagnostics from the OS would cause the audio to not work. I tried this again to achieve the same result before giving up.
Its absolutely a driver problem though, and I know that because I as I was spamming F10 to open the bios I was eventually met with a very loud beep. She works, she's just not communicating with the OS.
I am prepared to do everything besides a factory reset. I don't know what data he has on this machine and I am not inclined to find out the hard way.

I understand your HP Notebook 14-cf0014dx is no longer playing audio and Device Manager shows a High Definition Audio device Code 10 error after a restart. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
Run Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Go to Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Playing Audio.
This can automatically repair audio service and configuration problems.
Restart Windows Audio services
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test sound again.
Reinstall the audio driver (clean reinstall)
Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers.
Right-click High Definition Audio Device, select Uninstall device, and check Delete the driver software if available.
Restart the notebook so Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
Install the Realtek audio driver manually
Open Device Manager → right-click the audio device → Update driver → Browse my computer → Let me pick from a list.
Select High Definition Audio Device (Microsoft) if Realtek is not available.
This helps confirm whether the issue is driver compatibility.
Update the BIOS and chipset drivers
Go to the HP Software and Drivers page and download the latest BIOS and Intel chipset driver for the HP Notebook 14-cf0014dx.
Outdated BIOS or chipset firmware can cause Code 10 audio device failures.
Check audio output device settings
Right-click the speaker icon → Sound settings → Output.
Make sure Speakers / Internal Audio is selected as the default device instead of a wireless or HDMI device.
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (audio test)
Turn the notebook off.
Power it on and tap F2, then run Component Tests → Audio to confirm the speakers function outside Windows.
I hope this helps.
