When using web conferencing tools such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams, an issue occurs where selecting a Bluetooth earphone as a microphone (Hands-Free/Headset) causes not only the microphone input to stop working, but also the audio output (speaker) to become inaudible.

The product information and troubleshooting steps attempted so far are as follows.

Product Information

Product name: HP OmniBook X 14 flip

OS: Windows 11 Home

Applications used: Zoom, Microsoft Teams

Symptoms

When a Bluetooth earphone is connected, music playback works normally in Headphones/Stereo mode.

When switching the device setting to Headset (Hands-Free) in web conferencing applications, the microphone does not pick up any sound, and the other party’s voice cannot be heard either.

The same issue occurs with multiple different Bluetooth earphones, so it is unlikely to be a hardware failure of the earphones themselves.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Do you notice this issue only in conferencing apps (Zoom/Teams), or does it also happen if you test the headset in Windows’ Sound Recorder or Voice Recorder app?
  • When you switch to “Headset (Hands-Free)” mode, do you see the device listed correctly under Sound settings → Input and Output?
  • Have you installed all the latest Windows updates and HP drivers (especially Bluetooth and audio drivers)?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Default Communication Device
    • Right‑click the speaker icon → Sound settings.
    • Under Output and Input, make sure “Headset (Hands-Free)” is selected as the Default Communication Device.
  2. Update Bluetooth and Audio Drivers
    • Open Device Manager → expand Bluetooth and Sound, video and game controllers.
    • Right‑click each driver → Update driver.
    • You can also run HP Support Assistant to check for updates.
  3. Zoom/Teams Audio Settings
    • In Zoom: Go to Settings → Audio. Select the headset for both Speaker and Microphone.
    • In Teams: Go to Settings → Devices. Choose the headset under Audio devices.
  4. Test with Windows Voice Recorder
    • Open Voice Recorder and test the microphone in Hands-Free mode.
    • If it doesn’t pick up sound, the issue is likely driver or Bluetooth profile related.
  5. Re-pair the Headset
  • Remove the headset from Bluetooth devices.
  • Restart your laptop and re-pair the headset.

I hope this helps.
