In what way does nothing not work? The jack is not working? There is no volume or ???
Im not there to see it so you have to be specific, since you didnt mention this in this thread.
If there is no volume out of the jack no matter what you do, you will want to contact HP Support for a warranty issue.

Ok, here goes...when I use the headphone jack for my really cool external speakers the Bang & Olufsen audio equalizer does not work. Only the volume works. When I use my built in speakers everything works fine.

There should not be any reason for the equalizer part to not work.
Does this happen with other external speakers also?
Have you tried reinstalling the driver in the Device Mananger (Audio inputs and outputs, right click on the Realtek drivers and uninstall, then restart the PC)?
If that does not work, what is the full procuct number of the PC? There might be an update for it.
If an update does not work, you can still contact HP Support if its under a year old purchase.
They may know something that I dont.

OK thanks.
You didnt state if you have tried a different device yet to test with, like earbuds or such.
You need to try this to make sure.
Beyond that...
Your system only has one audio driver listed so I assume thats whats installed on your PC.
Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver
6.0.1.7801 Rev.C 267.2 MB Jul 18, 2016
I do not find another update listed for your model.
Its a Realtek driver, you might try a newer Realtek driver from a different system. It will either work or it wont.
Make a Windows restore point backup before installing the newer driver for insurance.
Here is a version that does allow the equalizer to work on the jack and "should" work on your model.
6.0.1.8023 Rev.D sp78936.exe
If this does not work, I am at a loss.
Sorry.

Thats good to know. Thanks for the update.
That also confirms a difference in those drivers for various models in a series.
The newer driver came from a high end Omen laptop.
The fact that the equalizer was greyed out though is really dumbfounding. An Envy is in the middle of the classes and that should not have been disabled.
