Hey there,
I recently updated my laptop to Windows 8.1, and it has been problems galore ever since. Beats Audio has stopped working. Rather, it seems it is always turned on even if I don't want it to be. Using fn+B does not help, neither does enabling or disabling it through the Beats Audio Control Panel. Initially I could not even check the box under the 'Listening Experience' tab in the control panel; after following the steps from this thread- http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-PC-Sound-and-Audio/Can-t-turn-on-Beats-Audio/td-p/1201775
I can now manage to check or uncheck the option from the control panel but there is NO EFFECT.
This is turning out to be extremely annoying, please help me figure this out.

Hello piezoelectron
I am sorry that it has taken so long but I think I have the solution for you here. I updated a Notebook here to 8.1 and after several attempts got the same issue you have. To resolve it I simply used the recovery manager to update the HP Quick Launch Software that came on the Notebook. Try following the steps below to see if this resolves your issue.
Step 1. At the Tiles menu type "Recovery"
Step 2. Choose Recovery Manager
Step 3. Drivers and Applications Reinstall
Step 4. Choose HP Quick Launch Software
Step 5. Install
Step 6. Restart your computer
Now this did not bring the Beats Audio Control Panel up for me but it did turn Beats Audio on and off in the Listening Experience which is what I believe you are after.
I would like to once again thank you for posting on the HP Forums and hope this solution resolves your issue. Have a great weekend!

I am linking you to the IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver for Windows 8.1 below. I would recommend that you download it and install it to resolve your issue with Beats Audio and not being able to turn it off.

Dunidar,
Thanks a lot for the link. I installed the driver, and now the Beats Control Panel pops up on pressing fn+B. Also, I can switch Beats Audio on or off through the control panel.
However, I still cannot switch it on or off simply by pressing fn+B as I could before. Is there anything else that I have to do?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Are you able to use CTRL + SHIFT + leftanglebracket and see if it will disable and enable that way for you.
Please re-post with an update on this step.

I have the same problem with the beats disabling my sound but I tried to follow the steps you last recommended and Step 4. Choose HP Quick Launch Software is not one of the options it lets me pick from. There is a similiar option but not quick launch software the one closes says quick start software
