I was checking my new computer's features and found a problem with the built-in microphone; it doesn't work.
I've had this computer for less than a day, installed all the updates, updated, deleted, and reinstalled all the drivers, but the built-in mic still does not work.
I've checked privacy settings for the apps, and I've tried with external microphones that have worked, but the one built-in does not.
Running the HP Audio Check, it finds only 1 issue: "The microphone or headset is unplugged."
When I go to Sound>Recording, the "headset microphone" appears greyed out with a white circle and a red arrow pointing down. The Configure and Set Default options are also greyed out.
How do I get my mic to work!?
PS: my speakers work perfectly.

I found a solution! 😭🤓😀
Following previous advice, I looked for the driver in AMD website and found a sort of support program that you can download to fix software issues; it's called: Auto-Detect and Install Radeon™ Graphics Drivers for Windows®, you can find it here: https://www.amd.com/en/support
or download it directly here: https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/installer/20.20/beta/radeon-software-adrenalin-2020-20.8.1-minimalse...
Once installed, it will show an option to do a "Factory reset" which will delete and reinstall all related drivers (it will not remove any program or app installed in your PC, or affect any of the already existing information as far as I can see).
I did just that and it worked like a charm! 😄
My built-in mic is working for the first time.
Hope this helps someone else!

Hi:
Do you have an AMD HD audio device showing up in the device manager with the little ! mark next to it?
If so, see this discussion...

Hi Paul,
Thank you! I do have that exact issue!
But just as another comment in the previous post, I receive the message that Windows has determined the best driver for the device is already installed. 😞
I tried deleting the driver and resetting the PC, but it did not work, the driver was reinstalled and the yellow triangle appears again.
I do believe now that this is possibly the way to solve this issue, but I do not know where to find other drivers as the AMD website seems to only have graphic drivers.

You're very welcome.
Glad you found a solution that worked for you.
I downloaded the latest AMD graphics driver from the AMD website, and the microphone driver within that file is older than the one I had attached in my other post.
I don't get why it worked for 3 of us and not for you and the other person.
Anyway, it is what it is, and I'm glad your notebook's microphone is working.
