HP Spectre x360 convertible
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Since May 19, 2017, my audio has not worked. Every time I try to reinstall the driver, it fails. Error message is "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. Reinstall drivers for this device (Code 18).

Event viewer shows that the driver was installed, but Device Manager continues to show there is no installed driver.

Windows audio troubleshooter message is that the devices are "unplugged." Not possible.

I tested the speakers and headphones using the HP Hardware diagnostic, and they both work fine.

THe ONLY fix I've found is to do a Windows System Restore back to May 17. But as soon as I restart the computer, I lose the driver again.

The driver that worked was version 9.0.68.60.

Please help. I suspect there might be some conflict with a Windows update, since they have been addressing recent security concerns.

I have a happy ending to this story. Working with HP technical support, we discovered that I had an old build of Windows 10, even though I have automatic Windows updates turned on.

When I updated to Windows 10 build 1607, my driver installed successfully, and the sound is working again.

Wanted to share this as another trouble shooting question for you to ask when working with people who are having driver intallation issues.

Get your full Model number or Product number from the Service Tag attached to bottom of laptop>

Once you have the info, use the button at top of this page titled "Support", then click "Software and Drivers" from the menu. On the next page enter your Model Number. After entering  click 'Find my product' button. On the next page be sure correct OS is selected-if not click Change to edit.A list will populate with drivers/software.

Download & Save the latest Audio driver.Go into Control Panel,Programs & Features -Uninstall Conexant software.Restart the laptop. After Windows loads, install Conexant audio using the downloaded file.

I've already done that. I've used HP Support Assistant and HP Recovery Manager. No joy.

Hold down the Windows key and press R. Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and tap enter.

In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Conexant device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall and restart.

After restart,  right click the downloaded Conexant driver and select Run as administrator.

Nope.

Also, the HP Support page for my Spectre lists three audio drivers. Two for Conexant ISST Audio, and one for Realtek. I've been selecting the one with the version number that seems to be in sequence with what I've been using.

Could you post full model of your X360. Perhaps I can find specs that define exactly which driver you need. I suspect the older driver will not install because of the security issue addressed with new driver.

Hmm. Now we are really out of sync. That product number leads me to a completely different laptop;

Where are you retrieving that number from-HP Support Assistant?

Sorry, I've been working on both my laptops today, one of which is an Envy. Here's the product number for the Spectre: W2Q33AV.

That is a mess with drivers on your Support page. The one that seems in line with what you have is the one I would choose. if you have it downloaded try another approach.

In Device Manager, right click and choose Uninstall. You should also have a box to check to remove the driver also. Afterwards, restart and let Windows fully load. Try to install the downloaded driver again. Right click, run as administrator.
