The microphone on my daughter's chromebook - which she got for Christmas - is all static now. It worked last week and when she tried in on Friday we only heard static when recording a flute lesson. And then again - using a different program (flipgrid) - her recording was all static again. Not sure if this means it is broken - or if there is a work around for it. PLEASE HELP - as everything is zoom calls and recordings for school right now. Thank you.

Encountering same static-y microphone issue on a HP Chromebook 11-v010nr. Using a corded 3.5 mm headset as a work around for now. Powerwashing the Chromebook doesn't solve the problem. Attempted to reduce microphone input levels via Flash but still hasn't improved. HP needs to issue a fix for this ASAP.

@MrsPappy@3point5rings I did some research on this and apparently a power wash hasn't helped either, here's what google has to say about it:

There is an open bug report about this issue. It's being worked on.

Next time it happens, file a feedback report so that the engineering and development teams can get details from your logs.

Report a problem or send feedback - Chromebook Help

And here's a suggested fix:

There is a regression on microphone on R81 on celes and setzer boards.
The team has identified the fix for them, and will merge the fix to R81 soon.

To check your board, please go to chrome://version and look for Platform field.

As for other boards, please file issue when mic does not work.
alt+shift+i, and mention "#audio microphone 1062884" in the description so we can locate the feedback report and look into system logs.
During filing feedback, please make sure that mic is in usage.
You can use online-voice-recorder.com or webrtc input/ouput test page https://webrtc.github.io/samples/src/content/devices/input-output/

If internal mic does not work for you, currently the workaround is to use headset mic or USB headset.

Information obtained from google support and chromium, as they manufacturer chrome OS.

I’m having this same problem.  My son can’t participate in his google classroom meets due to this.  It used to work just fine.  Help!

I had the exact same issue, and I finally found a fix! Since it’s a bug issue I switched the operating channel, and the microphone works perfectly fine now.

Open Settings

Select “About Chrome OS” from left column

Select “Additional Details”

Select “Change Channel”

Change from “Stable” to “Beta”

After system updates and restarts the microphone should work perfectly fine!
