HP ENVY Notebook - 17-n065na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I play audio on my laptop, i get their really annoying static /white nose sound coming from my speakers. It plays for around 2 seconds, stops for about 1 second, and starts again. This repeats indefintely, and only when I'm playing audio. If i spot playing audio, the static cycle stops after about 30 seconds.

The static stops with a little 'pop' sound as well.

Solutions I have tried: Updating my Realtek drivers, but i am up to date.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Realtek. When i uninstalled it, the probem stopped, but, obviously, i had no audio.

I have toggled spatial awareness on and off, as well as configured my speakers and troubleshooting. None of this has helped so far. Is there anything that can be done?

Thanks in advance.

@Throwaway21,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are getting constant static noise from your HP notebook. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

You’ve done an excellent job on diagnosing the issue from your end. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂 It is always a privilege to work with tech-savvy and technically competent customers like you. 🙂 We greatly value your relationship with HP. You are a valued HP customer and we appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Did you update the audio drivers or install any BIOS updates? (please do it if you haven't, as it may resolve your concern),

When was the last time it worked without these issues? did you try a system restore?

Does the static appear on an External speaker as well? and does your earphone work fine on another computer?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

  1. If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.

If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

  2. With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.

  3. With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.

  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.

Please update BIOS and chipset drivers from the link below and see if this takes care of the issue.

Link to update the Bios:  https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp85501-86000/sp85682.exe

Link to update the Chipset: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72105.exe

Here's a few things you can try if the sound is external:

  • Updating your Notebook computer BIOS
  • Keeping notebook air vents clear and clean
  • Increasing the efficiency of the notebook to reduce heat
  • Using Windows Task Manager to identify corrupt processes
  • Selecting power save settings to shut off your computer when it is not in use

If you are still getting the static noise from your laptop, Please run the system diagnostics as well as run a Audio test which is listed under Component test

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
