I downloaded the iHeart Radio app to try something new (with a triumphant sense of victory about this issue). About 5 min in, I got the digitized crackling sound. Paused the stream, it went away. Started it up, the crackling returned a short while later.
Boom. I knew it was too good to be true (like every other time).

I was contacted by PM today and was told that this issue has be escalated and is on the radar. We should consolidate our discussions to one thread so that none of the information is lost to anyone from HP that might look. It also serves to illustrate just how prevalent the problem is.

I just wanted to pitch in that I'm having this issue, too. The crackling only happens when my screen turns off and my laptop remains on (playing music).
I'm using an HP Spectre X360 4002dx. I'm using Realtek HW Audio Codec version 6.3.9600.119.

Great to hear you were contacted by HP. That's a step towards resolution!

Can we get representation from HP on the board to help us understand what you'd like us to do?
There are multiple issues but they are closely related to one another, though some of us suspect it's a single root cause. If HP is looking into this, having someone "steer the ship" around this issue on this forum for this group would be immensely helpful and comforting - i.e., Which thread should we consolidate issues into? How do you want feedback organized? Do you need to know our individual machine specs?
Ted (relieved this has caught HP's eye)

Yeah, the "pop" definitely came back. No sign of the crackling yet but I was starting to get used to not having the pop anymore and now that it's back, it seems more annoying than ever before! Sorry for getting your hopes up...

I thought I'd add my two pence here as i've had this problem for a while since upgrading to windows ten, But I've always been able to pin point the cause and thus work around it.
I use Whatapp web messenger in the latest version of Firefox, When I recive a new message and thus recieve a notification chime in the web browser tab, I can instantly hear the sound becomes crackly and there after any soundsthrough the speakers are awfull.
my work around is to close down the whatsapp tab in firefox 🙂

Thanks d0m. A classic bandaid if I've ever heard of one!
If there are others who are having these issues (audio issues) and following this thread but have yet to post, it would probably be good to post your experience.

As someone who has never used or installed whatsapp in any form whatsoever I can safely say that whatsapp is not the cause of the problem (after all it is just another application that uses the same windows sound API that all others use the same way) but perhaps it's just what you use the most that makes you notice it.

Then I decided to go back to Windows 8.1. Since then I have no problems at all. I have the latest Bios, from hp download site, but that didn't solve the problem either under win 10.
I have a13- 4021ca Spectre x360 with Intel i5, 8GB RAM and 256 GB SSD with Realtek sound chip.
I really hope that the issue won't happen in the future.

A moderator has deleted one of my posts earlier in this thread that was attempting to organize a day of mass complaints. They also mentioned "As for the thread you are posting in, I also want to let you know that we are aware of the posts regarding this issue and have brought it to the attention of our quality team to look into." I am unsure why HP woud only delete one of my many posts attempting to organize, and also why they have not told me how this is in violation of the forum rules. I can only assume this is in violation of the "do no harm" rule, which forbids participants from flooding a system. I will contact the moderator for more details. Please do not message any moderators about my issue or duplicate the post. I just want to keep everyone notified of the situation.
Edit: The modertor specified that the rules I violated were "Solicitations inviting members to join, participate in, or buy something are never relevant." and "deliberate attempts to overload a system, broadcast attacks, or attempts to avoid messaging blocking.". I never intended to overwhelm the support system, which was why I postponed the "complaint day", but my post was clearly a solicitation. Although I disagree with it, I will abide by it and will not discuss any "complaint days" further.
