Since a few days, my external microphone, connected to the 3.5 mm. jack of my laptop, is being detected as speakers.

It worked well before and I have made no changes to any settings concerning audio.

Hi @8Momo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your external microphone is being detected as speakers on your HP laptop, you can try the following steps to resolve this issue:

  1. Check Connections:
    • Ensure that the 3.5 mm jack is properly connected to the microphone port. Make sure you are using the correct port, and it is fully inserted.

  2. Update Audio Drivers:
    • Go to Device Manager by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting Device Manager.
    • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    • Right-click on your audio device and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

  3. Check Sound Settings:
    • Right-click the sound icon in the notification area and select Sounds.
    • Go to the Recording tab and ensure your microphone is set as the default device. If it is not listed, right-click and select Show Disabled Devices.

  4. Test with Another Device:
    • To rule out a hardware issue, try using the microphone on another device to ensure it works properly.

  5. Check Application Settings:
    • Some applications, like Skype or Zoom, have their own audio settings. Make sure they are configured to use your external microphone.

  6. Run the Audio Troubleshooter:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
    • Select Additional troubleshooters > Playing audio and run the troubleshooter.

  7. Device Properties in Sound:
    • Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar, select Sounds.
    • Navigate to the Playback and Recording tabs to correct any configuration issues.
    • Right-click the device that is being detected incorrectly and click Properties. Under the Advanced tab, ensure the settings are correct.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a more detailed software-related problem that requires further investigation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello VikramThe Great,

thx for the reply.

Actually, I already tried exactly all of this as those are the obvious steps to try.

But neither of them could solve the issue.

If you have any more suggestions I'l be glad to recieve them!

Kind regards, Michaël.
