Hi there. My laptop's onboard microphone is faulty; people struggle to hear me in virtual meetings. I'm told the audio is fuzzy and I'm inaudible, unless I use headphones. I also struggle with creating clear voice recordings and get white noise when I attempt to listen back. What might the issue be?

Hi @Zibusiso_N

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how inconvenient this must be, especially if you rely on your laptop for meetings and recordings.

From what you’ve described—low volume, fuzzy or distorted sound, and white noise—it suggests the onboard microphone is either not functioning properly or the audio input settings/drivers are causing interference.

Here are some steps you can try to narrow it down and potentially fix it:

1. Check Microphone Settings in Windows

Right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar → Sound settings.

Under Input, make sure the correct microphone (your laptop’s internal mic) is selected.

Click Device properties → Additional device properties → Levels and raise the microphone level and boost if needed.

2. Run the Windows Troubleshooter

Go to Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters.

Select Recording Audio → Run the troubleshooter.

This will check for configuration or permission issues.

3. Update or Reinstall the Audio Driver

Open Device Manager (Windows + X → Device Manager).

Expand Audio inputs and outputs.

Right-click your microphone device → Update driver.

If updating doesn’t help, you can uninstall the driver and restart your laptop—it will reinstall automatically.

For the most stable version, download the latest audio driver directly from HP Software and Drivers.

4. Test in Another Application

Try recording in the built-in Windows Voice Recorder app.

If the same white noise or distortion is present, the issue is likely hardware or driver related.

5. Reset Sound Settings

In Sound settings, scroll to the bottom and click Advanced sound options → Reset app volumes and device preferences.

6. External Factors

If your laptop is in a noisy environment, the microphone may be picking up background sounds.

Test with all external devices disconnected (USB, headphones, docking stations) to rule out interference.

7. Consider Hardware
If none of the above works and the problem is consistent, the onboard microphone hardware itself may be faulty. In that case, you can either:

Use an external USB microphone or headset as a workaround.

Have the laptop serviced under warranty if it’s still covered.

Would you like me to guide you directly to the driver download page for your laptop model so you can try the updated audio driver first?
