I have a new HP-Envy laptop that is having horrible problems with the microphone and speakers on Zoom and other video calls. A few minutes into the call, the laptop starts 'screeching' and I get a warning that there is no microphone detected and a warning that there are no speakers detected. The only was to stop the screeching is to restart the computer, which doesn't work when I' m hosting the meeting!

Welcome to HP Community
I have gone through your Post and would like to help
I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...
HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook
-
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
-
Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
-
Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
-
Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
-
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
Also ensure Windows is up to date.
Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available
Keep me posted how it goes
Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

The exact same thing happens to me, which is really frustrating since all of my work lines depend on these meetings. I thought it happened only in Zoom but so far it has happened in Messenger Audio call as well.

Did you run the HPSA already?
If the issue persists please perform a Reset. Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04742289

HP's tech support has reinstalled my drivers, etc, etc. and the problem seemed to have been solved for about a week. On today's Zoom call, the same problem reoccurred; a horrible screeching that was only stopped by a hard reboot of the laptop. It's unacceptable to have to explain to a Vice President that I have to shut down my laptop and reenter the chat .. and unacceptable that my Vice President had to wait for me. Would using external speakers and an external microphone fix this issue?

Yes, using an external microphone and speakers should help to resolve this issue. Have you tried using a headphone and check if the issue persists?
Also, have you run a hardware test on the audio devices?
What was the result?
Keep us posted.

I have the same problem, the solution did not fix it. Tech Support didn't fix it (I spent hours with them in Chat). Their solution was to pay someone else for a solution.
If you have this problem, I strongly recommend returning the computer to the store where you purchased it if you possibly can. That's what I'm doing.

I am experiencing the same problem with a laptop (for the second time) that's only a few weeks old. This was a replacement laptop that was under warranty and was replaced with the same exact laptop and THE same thing is happening (whether I'm hosting a Zoom call which is embarrassing - working virtually) or if I'm on a Zoom call mid-sentence. What gives HP? Please find a solution for this problem. - A very unhappy customer
