Hello,

I have a HP OmniBook 5 Laptop. When I plug my headset in, it appears under the output devices in Settings, but not under the input devices, so I cannot use the headset's microphone. The headset works on other devices, although I had a similar problem with a Dell Laptop. On the Dell Laptop I was able to resolve the issue by setting the headset to On-ear headset in the MaxxAudioPro dialog. Unfortunately, my HP device does not seem to have such an audio app installed and installing Realtek Audio Control does not work due to a missing realtek-realtekhsa.inf driver.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @UK2003

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you are experiencing an issue with your headset. Windows is detecting your 3.5 mm headset as an audio output device (Headphone - Realtek(R) Audio); however, it is not detecting the headset microphone. Instead, the Microphone Array (AMD Audio Device) remains the only available input device. This behavior typically indicates that the headset is being recognized as headphones only.  I would request you to please follow the steps:

Disable audio enhancements

Audio enhancements can sometimes interfere with sound output. To disable them:

  • Go to the Sound Control Panel
  • Right-click your audio device and select “Properties”
  • Go to the “Enhancements” tab
  • Check the box for “Disable all sound effects”
  • Click “Apply” and “OK”

Check Default Communication Device

  • Right‑click the speaker icon → Sound settings.
  • Under Output and Input, make sure “Headset (Hands-Free)” is selected as the Default Communication Device.

Show Disabled Recording Devices

  • Press Windows + R, type mmsys.cpl, and press Enter.
  • Open the Recording tab.
  • Right-click in the blank area.
  • Enable: Show Disabled Devices
  • Show Disconnected Devices
  • If Headset Microphone appears, right-click it and select Enable, then set it as the Default Device.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Turn it on and repeatedly tap Esc.
  • Press F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run the following tests:
  • Audio Test
  • System Board Test

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello @Pallipurath,

thanks for your answer, but none of the solutions resolves the problem.

Besides, when I use an audio splitter cable and plug in the microphone jack, the headset microphone is recognized (see attached image) and works, but obviously no sound can be played via the headset.

So, it seems to me that this is a settings / driver issue.

Best regards

Hi @UK2003

Thank you for responding.

I understand to hear that the issue is not resolved. However, Since the headset microphone is detected and works only when you connect the microphone plug through the splitter cable, but the headset speakers do not work at the same time, The issue is likely related to the audio jack detection, Realtek audio driver{ As you said}or the headset jack configuration, rather than a faulty microphone. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Reinstall the Realtek Audio Driver

  • Disconnect the headset.
  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click Realtek(R) Audio and select Uninstall device.
  • Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device (if available).
  • Click Uninstall.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Download and install the latest audio driver for your exact HP model from the HP Support website.
  • Restart the PC again.

Reset Windows Audio Settings

  • Open Settings > System > Sound.
  • Scroll to Volume Mixer.
  • Click Reset under Reset sound devices and volumes for all apps to the recommended defaults.
  • Restart the computer.

Update BIOS and Chipset

An outdated BIOS or chipset driver can affect audio jack detection.

I hope this helps.

Have a good day.

Thank you for sharing the details.

To run an audio test on an HP OmniBook 5, access the built-in UEFI diagnostics by powering off your laptop, turning it back on, and repeatedly pressing Esc. Select F2 System Diagnostics, navigate to Component Tests, and choose Audio to verify your speaker and microphone hardware.

Step-by-Step UEFI Audio Test:

  1. Turn off the laptop completely.

  2. Turn on the laptop and immediately start pressing the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.

  3. Press F2 to open the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI environment.

  4. On the main screen, use the arrow keys to select Component Tests.

  5. Select Audio and click Run once.

  6. Choose the device you want to test (e.g., Speakers or Headphones) and follow the on-screen prompts. The test will play a series of musical notes.

  7. Enter the number of notes you successfully heard.

Kindly share the test result with us.

Hello,

in the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI environment I tried running the Microphone Record Test. There the microphone was not detected (see attached image) and the test did not run successfully.

Best regards

Hi @UK2003

Thank you for responding.

I understand that the issue is not resolved, However if the microphone is not detected in both Windows and UEFI, and the issue persists with multiple headsets, the notebook's audio combo jack or audio hardware may require further evaluation. I would request you to contact the nearest service center for assistance, if the device is out of warranty, it may incur charges: https://support.hp.com/in-en/help/service-center
