Hooking up external speakers

I'm trying to hook up Bose external speakers to my HP Notebook Laptop. I have the AC adapter plugged in and I have the sound plug in the earphone. The system won't recognize the Bose speakers and give me the option of switching to them. Thanks

Have you attempted any steps on your own before posting on the HP Forums?

When was the last time it worked without these issues? Or is this the first time?

Are those powered speakers? USB or 3.5mm jack connections?

Did you check those speakers with other devices? does it work with them?
