So, Is there an actual solution? Also, why does the business or professional version of the laptop not beep, what's so different in the Bios that makes it beep in ours, personal version, but not the business or professional version.

@ashleyef11

Thank you for your feedback! I really want to try to help resolve this issue because, even though I haven't experienced it personally, it seems like it would be annoying.

I'm inserting a screenshot of what I see on the Levels tab of the Speakers Properties window. Would you mind replying with a screenshot of your Levels tab?

Also have you already tried changing the low battery/critical battery notifications and alert settings in  advanced power options? In case you haven't, here are some steps.

Start button > Type "power" > Click Power Options > Click 'Change plan settings' for the power plan that is selected > Click Change advanced power settings (at the bottom) > Scroll down to Battery and make changes to Critical battery action, Critical battery level and Low battery notification.

Let me know what results you get, if you get a chance please! 🙂

I have changed the low and critical battery levels and notifications in advanced power options. Before i performed the BIOS update, I was only able to get the ciritcal battery level down to 7% and the low battery level to 8%, after the BIOS update I was able to change them to 2% and 3% respectively, I also have my low battery notification set to off, but as I said in my first post, all this does is stop the little window from popping up that tells me my battery is getting low, it does nothing to stop the beep. The beep still starts as soon as I get to 12%, and it is one of the worst sounds I've heard a computer make, it is also very loud. Muting the speaker volume dulls it down quite a bit, but there is still a beep coming from somewhere else. I have to go into the levels tab and also mute the mono mix level that you see above. That gets rid of it completely but you obviously don't want it muted all the time so you have to wait til the beeping starts. If you aren't expecting it and the room is fairly quiet, it can scare the sh*t out of you. It seems like a very minor problem, and I suppose it is, but if you're out in public and you forget to mute everything it can be quite embarrassing, and it's not fun when it scares you either. I am really thinking there isn't a solution at the moment.

I went back through each post on this thread to get a better idea of what may be happening. There's got to be something that is being overlooked.

I need to know if the beeping sounds like a Windows sound or like an internal beep from the speaker on the motherboard.

This video demonstrates the Windows 8 default sounds.

Critical battery alarm can be heard at 0:40.

Default beep can be heard at 0:52.

There is also a Low battery alarm at 1:17 which is the same as the default beep.

This video demonstrates an internal beep from the motherboard.

The sound can be heard at 0:15.

If it sounds like a Windows sound take a look at this link for some ways to disable the system beep

Let me know what results you get 🙂

If only it was one of those cheery Windows sounds! The low battery beep we're experiencing doesn't sound like the windows sounds in the video (or how they sound when you test them in the sound settings). It's also sounds different from the second video - but closer for sure. It's very loud and very brief - like hitting a key on a touchtone telephone.

Not only did I cut the Default Beep, I changed my sound scheme to No Sounds althogether. Doesn't help. Muting system sounds in the volume mixer doesn't do anything either.

Like Ashleyef, I do not have a PC Beep volume option in my mixer. It's strange, but it appears that muting the speakers and the mono mix (not just one) does stop the beep. I've also tried disabling the speaker/headphones completely (via right click in the playback device menu) with no success. How would muting the speaker work, but disabling it not?

It beeps at 12% and my battery settings are: low battery: 5%; critical battery 3%; reserve battery level: 2%; low battery notification: off; low battery action: do nothing.

On a side note, I found it strange that my mute indicator light on F11 was stuck on red  whether the computer was muted or not; after a Windows update last night, now the indicator light won't turn on.

I appreciate the follow up from all the HP reps here - I'm glad to see we haven't been forgotten.

Hey ctownley85,

Let me first say thank you for your feedback. It makes it a lot easier to get to a resolution when you can get such feedback.  Rest assured, I have not forgotten about you. I want to do everything I can to help.

It would be helpful for me to know what product numbers, BIOS versions and operating systems everyone has. Like you mentioned in a previous post, ctownley85, this is coming from the motherboard speaker and not from the laptop speakers.

Here are the steps to find your product number.

Here are the steps to find your current BIOS version (taken from here).

  1. Windows 7: Click Start , enter msinfo32 in the search field, and then select msinfo32.exe from the list of results.
  2. In the System Information window under the System Summary category, look for the BIOS Version/Date entry. This is your current BIOS version.
    Figure 1: BIOS Version/Date
    BIOS Version/Date entry

  3. Write down the BIOS version and post it in your reply.

Once I have a few product numbers, BIOS versions and operating systems, I'll be able to do some research.

If you are following this thread because you have the issue too, I encourage you to post a reply with your product number, BIOS version and operating system at least, so I can have a better sample.
