Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

With remote learning, I have been required to attend a lot of zoom meetings, randomly it will give me an error that the microphone isn't working and then the speaker starts screaming like a broken record. I have to shut down my computer and let it cool off before the noise stops before it happens again the next day, or sometime even hours after. I have tried Uninstalling and reinstalling and updating all of the sound drivers and nothing has worked. It's nearly a month old, is there other steps I can take to try and fix it? Or should I return it and get a new one under the 1yr warranty?

Welcome to the HP support community.

 

Update the Bios, chipset and audio drivers using HP Support Assistant.

Download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: Click here

 

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

    Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

I've updated the drivers and the sound settings show the internal Realtek microphone as "unplugged" is the driver for that missing? It doesn't give me an option to connect the microphone

The Troubleshooting tool automatically finds and fixes many computer issues. Use it to troubleshoot microphone problems.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  2. Click Troubleshooting.

  3. Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio recording.

    NOTE: 

    Administrator permission is required to run this program. If prompted, type the administrator password or provide confirmation.

  4. The Sound troubleshooter opens. Click Next. The troubleshooter begins checking the audio service status.

  5. Select the device you want to troubleshoot, and then click Next.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions and make any changes suggested by the troubleshooter. When done, close the troubleshooter.

  7. If the problem persists, continue to the next step.

We may need to reset the privacy settings for the Microphone if the issue occurred after any recent windows updates:

  1. Open Settings from your start menu.
  2. Click on Privacy in order to access all your privacy settings.
  3. Select Microphone from the left pane and then click the Change button.
  4. Now, turn on the microphone for this device.
  5. Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
  6. Finally, in the app list, make sure to turn on microphone access for every app you want to give permission to access your microphone.
  7. Repeat the same exact steps but for your webcam this time.

If the issue persists, uninstall the microphone driver and restart to automatically install a fresh driver for the same.

  1. Open device manager, the fastest way is through the search bar:
  2. Open ‘Audio Inputs and Outputs’
  3. Left-click on your recording device.
  4. In the menu that opens up Click ‘Uninstall’.
  5. delete the driver. click apply/OK and then, restart the pc.

I'm not sure if your problem is exactly the same as ours but several of us have been battling a similar problem with buzzing during video conferencing (Teams, Zoom etc).  Our problem appears to be an issue with the Graphics Driver which I'm told also handles sound in the AMD Ryzen models. It looks like we might have a solution.

Note that updating the driver on its own is not enough. I had to uninstall the driver, run the AMD Driver cleanup tool and then install the driver dated 24th June to get it to work without the sound buzzing issue.
