HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 15-dq0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This is a brand new out-of-the-box unit which has static when using the internal microphone array.  When using blue tooth ear buds with a blue tooth microphone, there is no static.  Running Windows 10 64-bit v1909.  Updated RealTek audio driver using SP100906 which is supposedly for Win 10 1909 (Realtek driver date 9/17/2019 v6.0.8799.1).

Windows Troubleshooter cannot find a problem (surprise!), but there is static when recording on the internal microphone array.   I'd like to post an audio file of the static but it doesn't appear I can on this forum.

I suspect a hardware issue with the internal microphone array but want to see if anyone has an idea of software or settings I need to check before sending the machine back.

I understand that you are getting Static sound from the internal microphone.

Do nowt worry. I will try to fix the issue.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

1. Run Audio Troubleshooter

  - Launch Troubleshooting by typing and clicking “Troubleshooting” in

     Windows search.

  - Click on "Playing Audio".

  - Follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Check if microphone isn't disabled.

  - Right click on the Volume Icon on the taskbar, select "Recording Devices".

  - Click on "Show disconnected devices", and "Show disabled devices".

  - Select on Microphone, click on "Properties". If it is disabled, enable it.

  - Once enabled, set Microphone as default audio input device.

3. Check if microphone isn't muted.

  - Right Click on the Volume icon on the taskbar, select "Volume Mixer".

  - On the Microphone slider, slide it up to 100%.

4. Boost sensitivity of Microphone

  - Right Click on the Volume icon on the taskbar, select "Recording".

  - Double click on Microphone.

  - Open the Levels Tab, move the Microphone boost slider up to check audio.

5. Disable enhancements

  - Right Click on the Volume icon on the taskbar, select "Recording“, Double

     click on Microphone.

  - Open the Enhancements / Effects Tab.

  - Check "Disable All Sound / System Effects“. Click Apply, OK, test the Microphone again.

6. Change format of the Microphone

  - Right click on the Volume Icon on the taskbar, select "Recording Devices".

  - Double click on Microphone.

  - Go to the Advanced Tab, choose any of the 16 bit options on the list.

If the issue still persists, please uninstall the audio drivers and reinstall.

Also, update the BIOS.

1. Run Audio Troubleshooter

I ran this and it did not find any errors. Listening to sounds on the laptop isn't the problem

2. Check if microphone isn't disabled.

It is not disabled or muted. I can use Voice Recorder to record a file using the internal microphone array. I can hear my voice in the playback, but it has a low static crackling sound with it.

3. Check if microphone isn't muted.

See above.

4. Boost Sensitivity of Microphone

My PC does not have the "Recording" option. When I right click on the sound bar I get "Open Sound Settings, Open Volume Mixer, Spatial Sound, and Troubleshooting Sound Problems." None of these (except "Open Sound Settings"} has any info about the internal microphone array. I have adjusted microphone array levels and microphone boost in the Microphone Array Properties window but nothing changes the static under my voice when using the internal microphone array.

5. Disable enhancements

Again, my PC does not have the "Recording" option when right clicking the audio sound bar.

6. Change format of the Microphone.

I do not see any 16 bit options in the microphone section.

Driver reinstall doesn't change anything and I updated the bios.

I could send you an audio file of what it sounds like, but not sure that would help.

Sounds like a hum under my voice when I use the VR and any other app utilizing the internal microphone array..
