Microsoft Windows 11

Internal microphone not working, I think it is because the app driving it is the wrong one but can not get the one for the input device to go to the App for the output device. Can hear everything ok but when when trying to talk it doesn't work. I've have tried everything on here at least three times, no joy and that includes a rest? What can I do - any ideas would be appreciated

I just experienced this today. According to my Device Manager, there are NO drivers installed for my microphone, but I can't find the correct ones to install. I also can hear everything, but the microphone isn't detected. I just need to know where to get the drivers because it's not obvious on the support website.

Exactly as mine, mic doesn't exist as far as laptop is concerned, but maybe the driver is in the correct app used for the output device?? Otherwise not certain what to do next apart from trying a headphone with a mic as a new device - which isn't the best if you are having family family conversaions on Whats App etc.

Indeed!  I have two HP Omen Laptop 17-ck0000 computers and on both computers the default input device (the microphone) has disappeared (the microphone does not exist anymore) ... after some Windows 11 updates last week - coincidence, I think not!  I have been searching all weekend for the (now missing) driver for the microphone but could not find anything.  I have been looking for assistance everywhere but could find nothing on how to activate (or reactivate) the internal microphone on my laptops!  Very annoying considering that all applications using the microphone (such as Whatsapp) have become useless!

Same here. My support package is still valid, so I contacted HP tech support for help. They wanted to "reset my PC," meaning reinstall Windows, saying there was a glitch in the OS. No way was I going to let them reset my PC and lose all my settings, software and files. I ended up hanging up on the chat support. I am currently installing a Windows 11 repair update (Windows 11, version 23H2 (repair version)).

Hope this works!

I'd be interested in whether the repair works. I'm at a complete loss.

OK, I have found a solution - the microphone driver needs to be downnloaded and reinstalled.  In order to find out what happened with the disappearing driver, I first found and downloaded a small utility called "DriverIdentifier" (the most simple & easy driver updating tool)  from the "DriverIdentifier" website.  After running the utility and getting the scan results of my laptop computer (HP OMEN By HP Laptop 17-ck0xxx), I was told that the "Microphone Array (Intel Smart Sound Technology for Digital Microphones)" was not available (or not installed). Clicking on the "Update" option (on the right side of the line) I was taken to another webpage (Digital microphone device Driver for HP - OMEN By HP Laptop 17-ck0xxx working om Microsoft Windows 11 Pro).  Looking further down on the page, I decided to look at and download the first (most recent) driver in the line marked as "Intel Device Extension" with the filename "sp154034.exe", version number 9.21.3690.632 and released date of 2024-07-23.  Clicking on either the filename or the "Download" option took me to anothre webpage (Intel Device Extension drivers / HP OMEN By HP Laptop 17-ck0xxx) where I found the "Download from HP" icon. Once again, I was transferred to another webpage where the file download was initiated - the file "sp154034.exe" was downloaded from the following HP link: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp154001-154500/sp154034.exe

Finally, after running the file "sp154034.exe" and waiting a few seconds, I was told that a re-start of the computer was required.  After the re-start, clicking on the Windows 11 "Settings" icon, clicking on the "System" option, clicking on the "Sound" option, looking under the "Input" sub-menu, I noticed that for the option "Choose a device for speaking or recording", the "Microphone Array" was once again selected - I was one again able to use the internal microphone of my laptop computer (HP OMEN By HP Laptop 17-ck0xxx).

Hope this long explanation help you solve the microphone problem... 😉

Unfortunately, it did not work. It is absolutely ridiculous that the Windows update caused this issue, and Windows has not yet released a patch. Good luck!

@RayOBer

Do you recommend the rest of us go directly to the download and install of sp154034.exe? My HP ENVY 17 definitely does not have the same built-in audio/microphone as your OMEN, so I am hesitant to run the file.

THANK YOU @RayOBer!!! I am grateful to you for sharing the Driver Identifier solution. I actually had several drivers that needed updating, but the ones for audio did the trick! My laptop is fully functional again.
