HP Laptop 15-bs1xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My mic wasn't working, so I replaced the microphone driver with the one on realteck (Realteck High definition Audio sst for microphone), then the speakers started sounding alot quieter, and after checking that the Reduce Volume setting was off, i reinstalled the speakers driver (which is also called Realteck High Definition Audio SST for speakers) and it not only didnt fix the speakers, but now the mic is wonkey too. when i plug in headphones, it listens to my laptop mic and my headphone mic at the same time, and i dont want the headphone mic on, but it doesnt show up in the sounds secotion. The mics also are being finiky with discord, and sometimes my computor will play audio out of the speakers and the headphones.

So I tried to do a system restore from a restore point that was on 10/7/2018 before all these issues happened, and for some reason i keep getting an error saying it cant access a file due to the fire wall, so i cant finish the restor. I turned off firewall, wait 2 hours for the restore to finish, and still get the error, then I go into safe mode, and try it, and still get the error.

Everything i do to fix one problem just adds to the problems.

I dont want to factory reset

Thank you so much for reading

@GenoGold,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I see from your post that you are having issues related to your HP notebook. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

  • Have you confirmed the Microphone is listed under device manager?

  • Did you try an external microphone to check if that works?

For a start please try these steps:

  • Right-click on the speaker icon on the lower right corner of the taskbar.
  • Then please select recording devices. Please select the Headset Mic option
  • Then tap the Lid near the top gently several times next to where the webcam is located and check if the microphone bars respond to the taps and receive inputs.
  • If they do then it should work with a driver uninstall and reinstall.
  • Please make sure that the headset Mic is set to default and enabled in properties option.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to uninstall and reinstall the audio drivers from device manager.

a.    Click on Start; in the start search type “devmgmt.msc” without quotes and press Enter.

b.    Expand Sound, Video and Game controllers.

c.    Right click on the audio component and then click uninstall.

Once done, restart the computer and now update the Bios, Chipset and audio drivers on your PC from our HP support website, using this link.

Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant. Once done, restart the computer and check.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to check by making the headphone as the default device:

a.    Click on Start; Go to Control Panel.

b.    Click on Sound.

c.    Switch to Recording.

d.    Select your microphone/headset as the default device.

e.    Save the changes by clicking on OK.

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to check for Windows update:

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

If the issue persists, Check the 'Disable front panel jack detection' option:

1. Double-click on the Realtek HD Audio manager system tray icon (see fig. 1 above).

2. Click on small folder icon (see fig. 2 below).

3. Check that the 'Disable front panel jack detection' tick box is unticked.

4. Now insert the jack plug of either a microphone or headphones into the corresponding front panel socket of your computer.

5. If you now see the message 'Information: A jack has been plugged in', then you do not need to change this setting as your system has an HDA compatible front panel.

6. If you do not see this message, then click on the small folder icon again and tick the 'Disable front panel jack detection' check box.

For more details, please check the sound settings, as well as run a test on the audio - Please go through this support document - HP PCs - Resolving Headphones and Headset Problems (Windows 😎

Alternatively, you can  check if the internal Microphone is working and perform all the relevant steps from this link:  HP PCs - Resolving Microphone Problems (Windows 10, 😎   to troubleshoot the issue Then check if it gets resolved.
