my laptop has successfully connected to blue tooth on my IPhone (I have done online diagnostics adn the audip is working). I play something on my phone and the sound is coming out of my phone not my laptp - am at my wits end

@Irfan_06 is correct, the PC not not an audio player for a bluetooth device.
However, the PC can play music on the iPhone using iTunes and a USB cable.
I was never able to play music using Bluetooth even with my iPhone 12 paired. There is a discussion of the problem here

The iPhone never shows up as an input device, only as "other" but the USB cable allows it to appear in iTunes.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I see that you are facing an issue with playing sound from your Laptop.
If your phone is connected to the laptop via bluetooth. It will allow you to transfer data but cannot play sound from the speakers of the laptop as it is not an accessory.

Possibly the problem is a patent or required royalty fees. That was basically the problem with Firewire: Apple had the patent and Intel and AMD went on to develop USB as a competitor rather than pay fees to use firewire.
