From what I understand, the issues comes from it being a microphone array. Since there are two microphones, i think this means there are two channels and this is why programs cannot interpret the audio input. I talked with a guy from HP support named Blaine who tried to explain this to me. I will try to talk to him again and see if we can find a solution. My guess is there is an issue with the microphone array driver and there needs to be an update which HP or intel has not made yet.

Hi @all!
I'd like to share you my sudden solution...
We have connected headphones with mic to check whether it will work, then Speech settings -> Microphone setup your speech recognition button Get Started -> Cortana can't hear me -> Repeat sentence -> Diagnostics finished, Problems found (configure mic) and solved.
Then external microphone worked normally in apps, but after we disconnected external microphone internal microphone has started to work normally in apps.
I don't know what exactly helped so presented you the whole flow.
Hope this solution can halp someone else ))

hmm this did not seem to work for me. when i do this i have option of choosing microphone array or realtek audio (headphones). When I have headphones in it recognizes my voice for either option, however if i dont have my headphones plugged in and try this, it does not recognize my voice. glad to hear your issue was fixed siarblack, hopefully we can find a solution soon

Hi all,
-My 2 cents.
I too was having all of these problems with my internal microphone array checking and doing all the HP troubleshooting, and utilities. Nothing worked, until I went to the HP website and went to the drivers page for my model # and serial number (a 13inch Spectre Folio) , and installed the "Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver - Amber Lake (Windows 10 v1909)" audio drivers. After installing that, and a restart - the microphones are working again! It is sad that the "HP Support Assistant" that we all have on these laptops doesn't provide the fix or this driver.
If HP support is watching, you can close my support ticket from yesterday, as I resolved the issue myself.

thanks for the suggestion @Good_goshes
i found 4 different drivers for my model on the hp website. none had the amber lake title like yours did. When I tried installing the most recent from dec 2019 [Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver (Windows 10 1909)] it said the driver wasnt supported on this OS version. I installed the next most recent one [Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver (Windows v1903)] but this did not fix the issue unfortunately...

@Stephfr do you also have a 15 inch spectre? The main reason I did not want to do this is I can get over $200 rebate on my warranty if I dont send my laptop in. Also they said I have to back up all my files and programs onto an extrernal hard drive which I don't have and don't want to buy. If they fix the issue for you if you are able to figure out what they did to fix it and if you could let us know that would very much appreciated!!

Han_L I was able to fix the issue without sending it back to HP. To be honest I am not exactly sure what fixed it, but it started when I opened up "HP Audio Control". I played around with these settings and changed settings to optimize microphone for only my voice, and then my computer started playing back the noise I made into it. It was taking in audio from the microphone and playing it back through the speakers. It was super annoying and I couldn't figure out how to turn this off, but what I did notice is that now the Microphone Array was in my volume mixer. When I tried to turn this all the way down it fixed the echo issue but the microphone didnt have any input. I disabled and then enabled the microphone array in Sound->Input->Device properties and then turned it all the way down in the volume mixer and boom it was fixed. My internal microphone works for zoom and voice recorder now, I'll include screenshots of how everything looks now. Hopefully this will help you fix your issue as I understand how freaking annoying it is. Now if only i can figure out how to fix the buzzing noise my speaker makes when its turned up to 100. smh.

I was having the exact same problem as everyone else. Troubleshooting was of no help, it was showing that my drives were all up to date, but my microphone was still not working in Zoom. I combined the help of both Good_goshes and Seanokonsky and now it works great! I hope this helps someone else who is having the same issue.
I went to the HP service and driver website and put in my laptop's serial number. I selected the driver tab and found an audio drive for my laptop. Mine was called Whiskey Lake. After restarting my computer, the microphone worked, but every noise was now coming out of my speaker. Every sound made was repeating throughout the sound system. I then searched Volume Mixer on my computer's search function and turned down the microphone array. I now no longer hear the echo coming through the sound system, and my microphone works in Zoom! Whoo-hoo!!! Thanks for your help!

I had the same problem with the microphone. It worked in the control panel but not in the apps. I was able to fix it by searching for HP Audio Control, clicking on the Input tab, and then turning off HP Noise Cancellation. We had two HP laptops with the same problem, and both were fixed.
